The General English course is taught over six levels: beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced.
Many students take General English at lower levels and move on to higher-level courses – such as IELTS exam preparation or English for Academic Purposes – when they are ready.
Semi Intensive English
The course takes place on 2 afternoons per week from Monday to Thursday. Friday afternoon is off.

The general English Course at LAL really focuses on gaining confidence in the students' use and understanding of English, which can be adapted into the. Travelling Classroom
This course is designed to take place over 5 day trips with one hour structured lesson per day and the remainder of the day will be unstructured practise with your teacher and a registered tour guide. You will travel along the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Included in this course is; accommodation, breakfast, dinner and activities. Activities may include bungee jumping, zip-lining, walking with elephants to name a few. It is a circular route where you will depart from and return to LAL Cape Town. The itinerary is as follows:
Day 1: Cape Town to Sedgefield via Hermanus.
Day 2: Oudtshoorn Day Trip.
Day 3: Sedgefield to Jeffreys Bay.

General English + Mini-Group English
In LAL’s General English lessons, you can expect the course content to be based on the content outlined by the course book that the students follow - and this will be complemented by a range of interactive and dynamic activities organised by your teacher. You will work on the fundamental skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The school puts a particular emphasis on communication skills, so you should get ready to participate verbally in these classes in order to maximise your development. There are 20 lessons every week, with each session lasting for 45 minutes.
Afternoon mini groups offer a more personalized and private communication skill lessons.
Intensive English
The Intensive course is designed for students who want to improve their level of English in a short period of time but with a high intensity of 22.5 hours of lessons per week. Our General English course with 16 hours per week is our shortest course and is offered at 7 different levels. Students do either a written or verbal test to determine the best group for them to join.
All core textbooks are imported and prescribed to the International requirements for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching.

The group will use a textbook and workbook but the teacher will use supplementary worksheets or readers (no extra cost to the student). Regular testing is done to determine a student's readiness to progress to the next level. The Beginner to Pre-Intermediate levels are suitable for those learning English. For students who have a reasonable level of English language skills, the Intermediate and Upper-Int. classes would be applicable covering more in-depth reading and speaking topics.
